SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETING is usually used for multi-language conferences and seminars. Highly specialised, it is carried out by interpreters working from within soundproof booths. The interpreter listens through headphones to what is being said in the conference hall and will immediately translate into the designated language. The speech is listened to by the delegate with the aid of headphones, in the appropriate language at virtually the same instant it is being delivered in the original language. Interpreters work in pairs, alternating every half hour or so to facilitate an uninterrupted flow of speech giving immediate understanding to all delegates.
