It’s excellent to see that the Government has recognized the importance of the interpreters to the British Forces in Iraq. Following a campaign by the press, a number of MP’s and the Institute of Translation & Interpreting, the Government announced on the 8th October that it would create a new policy for interpreters who have worked for the British Forces in Iraq. Financial assistance will be offered to around 500 local Iraqi staff and their families who have worked for the Army for more than one year or who have worked for the Army prior to 2005 for more than 12 months. This assistance is to enable the families to resettle in Iraq or elsewhere and in certain circumstances admission will be allowed into the UK.
What an excellent thought provoking piece of television. From our viewpoint, it was even more interesting as it showed the importance of transcription, the time it can take and the difficulty of obtaining information especially in similar situations when people do not want to have their conversations overheard. It demonstrated that one word can take 20 minutes to hear but the importance of that one word can turn a case or implicate others who had previously not been in the frame. Above all confidentiality is priority. For more information about this type of service go to our section on transcription.
